Kiwis find out their doubles opponents in New York
Michael Venus has his highest ever seeding for a Grand Slam. New Zealand’s top ranked doubles player and his German partner Tim Puetz are seeded 4th for the US Open which starts in New York. (Tuesday morning NZT)
Venus who is at a career high of 6 in the individual ATP doubles rankings and Puetz will meet Kazakhstan’s Andrey Golubev and Spaniard Pedro Martinez in the first round. A potential third round showdown with Colombians Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah is on the cards. Venus has played the pair on numerous occasions with his most memorable win coming at the French Open in 2017 when partnering American Ryan Harrison, they beat the Colombians in the semi finals before going onto win the Roland Garros title.
It was at last year’s US Open that Erin Routliffe made her Grand Slam breakthrough with Canadian Leylah Fernandez reaching the third round.
A year later the Kiwi is ranked 31 in the world and is seeded 16th with her Polish partner Alicja Rosolska. They face Vivian Heisen and Katarzyna Kawa first up with a potential third round meeting against the second seeds Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula. Routliffe and Pegula won the Washington WTA doubles title earlier this month.
