COACHING OPPORTUNITY
Tennis Western BOP welcomes indications from any NZ registered Tennis Coach in the opportunity to deliver a tennis coaching programme for accelerated junior players in this region in 2027. Coaches are requested to design their own programme and create a preferred financial model. A full application package will follow.
To register your expression of interest in this project, please contact the Tennis Western BOP Chairperson, Robert Naumann, at nauedubiz@eol.co.nz no later than Friday 9 August 2026.
Description of Current Accelerate Junior Coaching Programme
This has essentially been in the same format for the last eight years. It is fully explained in the Junior Development Pathway can be found at http://www.tenniswesternbop.co.nz/junior-tennis/
Essentially the accelerate squads are by invitation only. Selected players are entered into a development programme or a representative programme with each group having squads of different levels. There is also a speed and conditioning programme. Players in the squads are required to enter a set number of tournaments per season and have as much match play as can be arranged. From time to time there are “educational workshops”.
Players in the accelerate squads continue to work with their own club coaches. They are not in competition.
The Western Bay of Plenty and Waikato Bays teams that compete at intra-regional and national level are selected from these accelerate squads. A pathway is also being developed for transition to American University Tennis Scholarships. The squads have just reached a high as far as player quality is concerned. However, several of the best players will leave before the end of the year and there are noticeable gaps in the younger age groups. Only two players will be at the elite level in 2027.
The accelerate coaching programme is currently led by two coaches on three-year self-employed contracts with additional assistant coaches employed for specific activities. Sessions are on Mondays and Thursdays with one or two Sundays for mixed hitting.
Currently, the programme operates at two venues: Tauranga Lawn and the Tennis Western BOP Regional Centre at Papamoa. Hard courts is the preferred surface.
Accelerate Programme Total Cost: $10,000 per season that is mostly funded by grants and parents. Tennis WBOP supplies the balls as well.
