Another doubles title for Ajeet Rai

Saturday, 25 November 2023

New Zealand’s Ajeet Rai has another doubles title to his name after taking out an ITF Men's World Tennis Tour M25 event in Brisbane with Australian Thomas Fancutt.

The number one seeds beat Joshua Charlton (AUS) and Emile Hudd (GBR) 6-4, 6-4 in the final.

Their toughest match was in the first round against the Japanese pairing of Shintaro Imai and Daisuke Sumizawa.

After losing the first set and coming back to win that opening match, Rai and Fancutt didn't drop another set for the remainder of the tournament.

This is the second doubles trophy of the year for Rai and Fancutt, who were also victorious at an ITF Men's World Tennis Tour M25 event in Darwin in September.

Rai also won his first M25 pro singles title in Cairns in October.

The 24-year-old Kiwi has had a solid few months on tour and this hard-court win sets him up nicely for the New Zealand summer of tennis ahead.

He was also part of the New Zealand Davis Cup team that beat Thailand in Invercargill in September.

Rai convincingly won his singles match against Thailand's Maximus Jones 6-1, 6-3.

This latest win in Brisbane is the 11th pro doubles title of his career.

Meanwhile, fellow Kiwi Finn Reynolds, who also played in the Davis Cup tie in Invercargill, recently won a doubles title at an ITF Men's World Tennis Tour M15 event in Valencia, Spain.

Reynolds and his Ukrainian partner Volodymyr Uzhylovskyi didn’t drop a set throughout the tournament.

The 23-year-old Kiwi then followed that up with a finals appearance at another M15 event in Alcala de Henares, Spain, playing with Jesse Flores from Costa Rica.

The win in Valencia was Reynolds' third ITF Men's World Tennis Tour M15 doubles title of the year, and the seventh of his career.
