Tennis NZ Wahine Coaching Scholarship

Tennis NZ is committed to increasing the number and capability of female tennis coaches throughout Aotearoa.  To achieve this aim, Tennis NZ is providing an opportunity for female coaches to access our 'Tennis NZ Wahine Coaching Scholarship' supporting participation and completion of the 'Development Coach' qualification.

Tennis NZ will aim to connect scholarship recipients with a female coaching mentor during the course duration. Additional opportunities to access professional development within the tennis industry including competition delivery, officiation, volunteer development or performance coaching will also be a focus.

This scholarship is available to wāhine aged 17 years or older and from all backgrounds

  • Scholarship holders will benefit from up to a (50%) reduction towards the overall 'Development Coach' course fee, taking the course fee down to $1000.00 plus GST (full cost $2000.00 plus GST)

  • Access to professional development seminars, networking and workshop opportunities conducted by Tennis NZ staff.

Scholarship holders will be selected based on the following criteria:

  • Be a citizen or permanent resident of Aotearoa

  • Must be 17 years or over at the time of application

  • Sees tennis coaching as a viable career and shows a desire to be a professional tennis coach

  • Currently coaching a minimum of five hours per week, or can provide evidence of previous coaching experiences

  • Shows a commitment to delivering Tennis NZ national programming (Hot Shots Tennis)

  • Nominate a supervising coach who holds a minimum of the Tennis Australia Club Professional coaching qualification (or international equivalent). 

  • Completed a current New Zealand's Police vetting screening 

  • Hold a valid First Aid certificate or be willing to attend a course as part of this application 

  • Shows commitment to supporting the sport of tennis and its communities

  • Demonstrate high levels of maturity, commitment and self motivation.

  • It is desirable that coaches applying for this scholarship have previously attended the 2-day 'Coaching Assistant Course'.

Unsuccessful applicants 

Tennis NZ is committed to supporting as many wāhine coaches as possible. Applicants who are not awarded the full scholarship will be invited to the following:

  • Wāhine teams calls and in-person Wāhine coaches networking events where applicable

If no suitable scholarship applications are received during the application period, Tennis NZ reserves the right not to offer a scholarship.

Tennis NZ’s decision regarding the award of the 'Wahine Coaching Scholarship' will be final and no correspondence will be entered into. Note: There are a limited number of scholarships available for each coaching course.

SELECTION PANEL

The selection panel will consist of Tennis NZ Head of Participation, Tennis NZ Coach Development Manager with input from an experienced TNZ coach developer. Tennis NZ will notify applicants of the outcome of their application in writing.

Please note: Successful applicants must also submit a completed Tennis NZ Development coaching course application form online.

TERMS & CONDITIONS

Obligations of Tennis NZ                                                                                             

  1. Make a contribution of up to 50% towards the 'Development Course' fee

  2. Offer virtual professional development/networking workshops for scholarship recipients

  3. Aim to appoint a female coaching mentor to support scholarship recipients for the duration of the scholarship

  4. Provide access to extension modules as and when available

  5. Provide recipients with guidance for planning professional learning opportunities aligned to future tennis coaching roles

Obligations of the scholarship recipient

On accepting the Tennis NZ Wāhine Coaching Scholarship, the successful applicants will consent to being bound by and agree to the following:

  1. Participation in the Wāhine Coaching Network 

  2. Make a commitment to introduce at least one (1) initiative at your club / coaching venue to increase tennis opportunities for girls and women.

  3. Support the delivery of a minimum of one (1) Tennis NZ / Regional tennis activations for a minimum of four (4) hours during the (12) month scholarship period

  4. Where applicable, support the delivery of a 'Coach Assistant Course' in their area

  5. Become an advocate for the Tennis NZ Wāhine Coaching Scholarship Programme

  6. Agree to the 'Development Coaching Course' Terms and Conditions

  7. Aim to complete the 'Development Course' within (12) months. A (12) month extension to scholarship recipients looking to complete course requirements may be granted. Any extension will need to be made in writing and will incur a $400 extension fee.

  8. If all course requirements are not successfully completed within (24) months from the start day of the initial course, the recipient will be withdrawn from the course and required to repay the scholarship grant in full (up to $1000.00 plus GST)
