Surprise defeat for Venus and Murray in Estoril

Michael Venus and his British partner this week Jamie Murray have suffered a surprise semi-final defeat at the ATP 250 event in Estoril.

They have lost in straight sets 6-2 6-4 to the Portuguese wildcard pair of Nuno Borges and Francisco Cabral.

Venus will team up with Murray again at the Madrid Masters this coming week where they are seeded 8th. They will face Greek singles star Stefanos Tsitsipas and his brother Petros in the first round.

Venus’s regular partner Tim Puetz is still recovering from the ankle injury suffered at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Venus is projected to re-enter the top 10 in the ATP doubles rankings at 9 when they come out on Tuesday NZT.

Rubin Statham has been beaten in the singles final at the ITF tournament in Chiang Rai in Thailand. New Zealand’s top singles player has lost 6-4 6-4 to Japan’s Makuto Ochi in the final.

Statham defeated another Japanese player on Saturday in the semis, Takuto Niki 6-3 7-6 (3)

Paige Hourigan and her doubles partner Valeria Savinykh have lost the final at the ITF tournament in Monastir, 6-1, 3-6, 12-10 to Nigina Abduraimova and Hiroko Kuwata.
