Reynolds, Watt win marathon semifinal super tiebreak in Challenger semi

Saturday, 05 April 2025

The all-Kiwi team of Finn Reynolds and James Watt have recorded an incredible win in the semifinals of the ATP Challenger tournament in Morelos, Mexico, winning the third set super tiebreak 17-15.

Having won the first set 6-3, against Francis Casey Alcantara from the Philippines and Thailand’s Pruchya Isaro, they dropped the second set 6-2.

In the super tiebreak, Reynolds and Watt went up 3-1, but later were down 6-4. Alcantara and Isaro went on to have match points at 9-6, but despite being so close to losing, the New Zealanders never gave up and won four points in a row to give themselves a match point.

Watt put a forehand into the net on that point and from then on, there was nothing between the two teams, with both of them getting further match points.

But at 15-15, Reynolds put away a volley at the net and on the next point Isaro double faulted.

Because of the way the match ended, Reynolds and Watt restrained their emotions, but would have known what a special victory this was.

In the final, Reynolds and Watt will play against Antiga’s Jody Maginley and Alfredo Perez from the United States.
