Marcus Daniell and Finn Reynolds win in Wellington

Friday, 15 December 2023

Marcus Daniell and Finn Reynolds have won the men's doubles title at the ITF World Tennis Tour: Wellington.

Reynolds won this same event last year with a different doubles partner, giving him back-to-back pro titles in the capital.

This was Daniell's first pro event back after injury and he and Reynolds didn't drop a set the whole tournament.

They beat Kiwi Corban Crowther and his Australian partner Tai Sach in the semis 6-4, 6-2 and then in the final cruised past Joshua Charlton from Australia and Emile Hudd from Great Britain 6-4, 6-2.

Reynolds has been in good recent form on the ITF Men's World Tennis Tour, winning a doubles title at an M15 event in Valencia, Spain in November and then making the final at two other events in Spain later the same month.

With this week's win in Wellington, the 23-year-old Kiwi now has four ITF Men's World Tennis Tour M15 doubles titles this year, and eight in his career.

He was also a member of the New Zealand Davis Cup team that beat Thailand in Invercargill in September, winning his doubles rubber with Artem Sitak.

Daniell and Reynolds also made the final of the men's doubles at the Wellington Open last week, which was also held at the Renouf Tennis Centre.

That was Daniell's first competitive tournament back after injury and now he's had two solid weeks on court and has hit the ground running after a long break away from the game.

In the other men's doubles semi-final at the ITF World Tennis Tour: Wellington on Friday, New Zealanders George Stoupe and Reece Falck won the first set but eventually went down 6-4, 6-7, 6-10 to Joshua Charlton and Emile Hudd.

In the women's doubles semi-finals, Kiwi Jade Otway and her Australian partner Catherine Aulia lost to Ella Simmons and Belle Thompson from Australia 4-6, 6-3, 6-10.

And New Zealand's Elyse Tse and her Thai partner Lunda Kumhom lost to the Japanese pairing of Yui Chikaraishi and Nanari Katsumi 1-6, 3-6.

Yui Chikaraishi and Nanari Katsumi went on to win the women's doubles title on Friday.

The men's singles title was won by Australia's Matthew Dellavedova and the women's singles title was won by Japan’s Mao Mushika.
