Kiwi Clay Junior Championships

New Tier 1 National event for NZ Juniors

Tennis New Zealand are pleased to announce the addition of a new Tier 1 National event to the junior schedule for 2024.

The Kiwi Clay Junior Championships are the first clay court national event to be held in New Zealand. The Kiwi Clay Junior Championships are age-based competitions to for the top 12u and 14u players in each of their age groups. The Kiwi Clay Junior Championships are located in the wider Central region – Martinborough. Learn more about the clay court facility here.

The proposed date for this pilot event will be February 2024 which will see the top 12 players in each age group work on their clay court craft over a 2-day training camp before then competing in a 3-day tournament.

As the clay courts are situated on private property in Martinborough the draw size will be a total of 12 x players to compete per age group. The 2-court clay court venue is set up with on-site accommodation for 12 players and 2 staff, so all players will be invited to stay on site and duty of care for players will be provided by Tennis NZ.

Acceptance and Event Format

  • The acceptance list will be produced using WTN rankings as of 22nd December which will ensure the Junior Nationals results are part of the WTN update.
  • Players will compete in a singles only in round robin format which is then split into playoffs – please see the Event Schedule and Key Dates below.

Transport and Costs

  • Players will be responsible for getting themselves to Wellington train station. Transport will then be organised from Wellington Train station to the venue in Martinborough by TNZ.
  • Players will be required to meet at the Wellington train station at the specified times, as a group they will then catch the train to the Featherston train station. On return, players will then also be returned to the Wellington train station.
  • There will be a Tennis NZ representative waiting with all children on both the train to and from the venue. The Tennis NZ representative will be responsible for all duty of care until the last player arrives/is picked up from the train station.

The cost of the event will be $500 inclusive of entry fees, 5 nights’ accommodation, duty of care and catering.
