Lulu Sun has won her first round match at the Catalonia Open, defeating Ane Mintegi Del Olmo 6-4 6-4.

Having lost in the second round of the Madrid Open last week, which is an event that stretches over a fortnight, Sun signed up to play in the WTA 125 Catalonia Open, in Vic, Spain, with the likes of Leylah Fernandez and Bianca Andreescu also doing the same.

Sun is the second seed at the tournament and got into a tough battle against Mintegi Del Olmo, but came through in two tight sets.

In the second round, Sun will play against world No 161 Oksana Selekhmeteva from Russia.

Meanwhile, in the second round of the men’s doubles at the Madrid Open, Michael Venus and Nikola Mektic defeated/lost to the all-Italian team of singles specialists, Flavio Cobolli and Lorenzo Musetti 6-3 7-6(4).

In the quarterfinals, Venus and Mektic will play the winners of the match between Marcelo Arevalo and Mate Pavic, who are the top seeds, against Jamie Murray and Rajeev Ram, which will be played on Wednesday.
