Setback in Suzhou, but Sun still on the rise

Thursday, 02 October 2025

Lulu Sun’s six-game winning streak has come to an end following a close loss to Victoria Jiménez Kasintsevaa from Andorra.

The New Zealand No 1 lost 2-6 6-4 6-2 in the second round in Suzhou, China.

In the first round Sun knocked out top seed Iva Jovic for one of her best wins of the season.

Although Sun took out the first set, she was unable to keep that momentum going for the remainder of the match.

Despite this loss, it’s been a successful couple of weeks for Sun in China as she has moved her ranking up from 146 to around 125 when they’re next updated.

It’s likely the 24-year-old will need to be at around 105 in the world to make it into the main draw for the Australian Open in January.
