Kiwi Winners in both Men's and Women's Doubles Finals in Wellington

Saturday, 14 December 2024

New Zealand's Monique Barry has won the Women's Doubles Final at the World Tennis Tour in Wellington. Her and her Dutch partner Merel Hoedt made fairly light work of the second seeds, defeating Japanese paring Shiho Akita, and Nanari Katsumi 6-3, 6-3.

This is Barry's second ITF 15 level doubles title this year, after winning a title in Thailand earlier in the year.

Barry and Hoedt were in control throughout both sets, breaking early and keeping the pressure on throughout. They fought off a break point while serving for the match, and got the job done in an hour and 12 minutes.

It's been a very impressive display from the pairing all week, who have not only not dropped a set en route to the title, but haven't conceded more than four games in a set all tournament.

On the men's side, the doubles title was won by Kiwi pair Ajeet Rai and Isaac Becroft. The second seeds defeated Kiwi Anton Shepp, and Australian Tai Sach 6-1, 6-3. The pair proved too strong, taking only 47 minutes to clinch the title. It's been a great start to the Summer Series for Rai and Becroft, who also won the Wellington Open doubles title together last week.

Rai had already been on court earlier in the day, winning his singles semi-final against Australian Moerani Bouzige 6-2, 6-4. He will play Australian qualifier Tai Sach for the title tomorrow.

The tournament, held at the Renouf Tennis Centre in Wellington, is a professional tennis event at the ITF 15 level, offering $15,000 in prize money for both the men’s and women’s tournaments.

The singles finals will be played tomorrow, before many of the competitors will make their way north to Tauranga to compete in the EVES Open, beginning on Monday.

This event is a part of the Tennis NZ Summer Series, and is free to attend.
