NZ Name Team To Compete At Billie Jean King Cup In April
Tennis New Zealand has named the team that will travel to India to compete at the Billie Jean King Cup Group I (Asia/Oceania) competition next month.
The team includes:
Erin Routliffe
Lulu Sun
Monique Barry
Valentina Ivanov
Aishi Das
Captain: Matt Hair
The Group I Asia/Oceania competition runs from 7–11 April in New Delhi and will see six teams from around the region compete in best-of-three ties, featuring two singles matches and one doubles match.
The format is the same as last April, when New Zealand topped their group to progress to the play-off level of the competition, defeating all opponents bar one after promotion had already been secured.
En route to this historic showing, Lulu Sun did not lose a singles or doubles match she played. Monique Barry contributed with a string of high-level doubles performances, as well as a win in a three-hour epic against Chinese Taipei’s Fang An Lin. Aishi Das also secured a win over world No. 379 Eudice Chong.
New Zealand will face strong competition from India, Indonesia, Korea Republic, Mongolia, and Thailand. Notably, Indonesia has named world No. 40 Janice Tjen, the highest-ranked singles player at the competition.
