New Zealand’s junior girls national tennis team has finished 8th at the Junior Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Final Qualifying tournament in Kazakhstan.

The team, competing in Shymkent, included Yashwitha Reddy (Auckland), Emily Dunn (Capital Coast), Audrey Tran (Auckland), non-travelling reserve Dallas King-Ehau, and captain Emily Fanning.

The girls got off to a strong start, advancing to the quarterfinals with wins over Hong Kong China and Kyrgyzstan in the group stage.

Facing a challenging draw in the knockout rounds, they fell to Japan, and later to China and India, finishing in 8th place - a commendable result given the highly competitive field.

The four teams who have qualified for the next stage of the tournament are Chinese Taipei, Australia, Japan and Kazakhstan.
