New Zealand go one up against Jamaica

Saturday, 01 February 2025

Jack Loutit has put New Zealand into a strong position in the Davis Cup tie against Jamaica, winning the opening rubber 3-6 6-2 6-1 against the opposition’s No 1 Blaise Bicknell.

Play was suspended when due to rain when Bicknell was up 3-1 in the opening set and Loutit couldn’t get that break back after the resumption, but was able to get 3-0 lead early in the second set.

Loutit broke again when Bicknell was serving at 2-5 and the Kiwi continued that momentum into the deciding set, once more going up 3-0.

The 20-year-old Aucklander remained solid from the baseline, forcing errors from Bicknell and ended up comfortably taking the third set.

The next match is between New Zealand No 1 KP Pannu and Rowland Phillips.
