Lulu Sun's match moved to Tuesday at Australian Open

Sunday, 12 January 2025

Lulu Sun now play against Danka Kovinic on Tuesday at the Australian.

Sun was due to play against the Montenegrin in the third match on Court 15 on Monday. However because of persistent rain in Melbourne on Sunday, many of the day's matches on outside courts have been rescheduled for Monday. This has resulted in tournament organisers putting Sun's match Kovinic back a day.

The 23-year-old Kiwi avoided being drawn against any of the seeds in the first round and she’ll go up against the Montenegrin who used her protected ranking to get into the main draw.

Kovinic reached a career-high ranking of 46 in 2016 but is currently at 1293.

She has only played in one tournament this year and lost in the first round of the WTA 125 tournament in Canberra, going down to world No 150 from Japan, Sara Saito.

Although Sun avoided any seeds in singles, she hasn’t been as fortunate in doubles. She has teamed up with Hungary’s Fanny Stollar and they’ve been drawn against the top seeds Katerina Siniakova from the Czech Republic and the American Taylor Townsend.

Erin Routliffe and Gaby Dabrowski are the No 2 seeds in Melbourne and they will play against the American duo of Danielle Collins and Desirae Krawczyk.

In the men’s doubles, fresh from winning the ASB Classic, Michael Venus and Nikola Mektic are the fifth seeds and they’ll play the Portuguese team of Nuno Borges and Francisco Cabral first up.

Doubles matches at the Australian Open are set to begin on Tuesday.
