Waikato University Tennis Club

Founding the University of Waikato Tennis Club

When I arrived in New Zealand in July 2023, I noticed the absence of a tennis community on campus. Driven by my passion for tennis, I founded the University of Waikato Tennis Club in February 2024 to create a space for students who shared my love for the sport. Starting with minimal resources, I invested money in tennis balls and coached beginners while organizing practice sessions for intermediate players. Despite initial challenges, including limited access to a single, poorly maintained court, we persevered.

Growth and Partnerships

By the second semester, our club had gained enough momentum to partner with the Waikato Tennis Trust, providing members with access to proper courts and professional coaching. We began hosting monthly events, including open days and friendly tournaments, and secured sponsorship from Kiwi Tennis, thanks to their director, Pete. Our efforts were recognized when we received the 'Rookie Club Award' from the Waikato Students' Union in October 2024, highlighting our rapid progress.

Support and Sponsorship

Pete from Kiwi Tennis generously supported our club with equipment, including tennis ball baskets and prizes for tournaments, such as tennis grips, merchandise, racket bags, and caps. Wayne from Waikato Tennis Trust provided free court hire for our first session and ongoing discounted rates. Additionally, Pete offered a 20% discount at the Pro Shop in Lugton Tennis Park for university students, exceeding our initial proposal.

Membership and Promotion

We offer flexible membership options through Google Forms, including semester-based and annual memberships, as well as a casual participation option for those unable to commit. Our promotional strategies include an active Instagram account, participation in the university's Club Days, and posters around campus. One of our most successful tactics was distributing creative flyers designed as mock dollar bills with a popular cat meme, which effectively engaged students and raised awareness of our club.

Looking Ahead

As we move into 2025, our focus is on strengthening our foundation and expanding our community impact. The journey from identifying a need to creating a thriving club with over 100 members that also connects to local community tennis showcases how tennis can be build through collaboration, genuine passion and dedication.
