From Committee to board

Greenhithe Tennis Club

Six years ago, Greenhithe Tennis Club made a change to the management and administration of their club, from functioning as a committee to a board structure.   Their objective was to work more effectively with a smaller number of members within a defined skill set to manage the governance at the club.

Transitioning from a committee to a board structure can be a significant change for a tennis club, however Greenhithe worked through the process, consulting their members and stakeholders, keeping them informed of the reasons for the transition and the benefits that these changes would bring.

From a previously large club committee Greenhithe’s choice to change to a board allowed them to formalise roles recruiting specific people rather than including all interested members.  These well-defined roles and responsibilities led to more efficient decision-making and accountability, with everyone having a better understanding of their duties.

Part of this change process included employing a manager for a set number of hours per week to take over the day to day operations.  With an annual plan attached to their future plan they were better placed to coordinate the managers tasks and club operations. The inclusion of a dedicated and accountable manager with strategic direction has allowed them to function in a more professional and effective manner.
