INSURANCE FOR REGIONAL TENNIS ORGANISATIONS AND CLUBS

Howden, in partnership with Tennis NZ, has served up an ace for Kiwi tennis clubs with premium insurance that features far wider coverage than standard policies.

KEY POLICY POINTS

The information below represents high-level general considerations regards policy coverage benefits. However, this information is subject to the terms, conditions, limits, and excesses in the policy wordings. Please consult your insurance broker first and also ensure that you carefully read the relevant policy wordings and any other coverage documents which outline the benefits, features, terms, conditions, limits, excesses, waiting periods and exclusions of cover.

  • Liability protection

Tennis clubs host numerous players and spectators, and accidents can happen. Tennis club insurance provides liability coverage, protecting the club from legal and financial consequences in case of injury or property damage on club premises.

  • Property and equipment coverage

Tennis clubs often have valuable equipment, such as courts, nets, and maintenance tools. Tennis club insurance can cover the cost of repairing or replacing this property and those items in the event of theft, vandalism, or damage from natural disasters.

  • Event coverage

Clubs may organise tournaments, exhibitions, or social events. Tennis club insurance can offer event-specific coverage, including cancellation protection, should unforeseen circumstances force the club to cancel or postpone an event.

  • Protecting club finances

Unexpected costs arising from accidents, legal claims, or property/equipment damage can strain a club's financial resources. Tennis club insurance can help safeguard the club's financial stability by covering expenses of this type.

  • Compliance

Some local authorities or sports organisations may require tennis clubs to have insurance coverage as a condition of operating and/or hosting events. Your club may need to purchase tennis club insurance in order to comply with such regulations.

  • Construction

If needed, construction insurance for upgrades to buildings and courts can be arranged (as an extension of an existing policy for works up to NZ $100,000, or if more than that value, via a separate policy).

  • Management Liability, including indemnity

This will provide cover for the club’s “Management Personnel”, i.e. the club’s Committee members and officers (including administrative/management personnel) and trusted personnel and staff in relation to:

  1. Club funds mismanaged by Management Personnel and/or any trusted person;
  2. Allegations against Committee members (i.e. the board) and Management Personnel for breaches of privacy;
  3. Defence costs in relation to allegations made by members for a breach of duty by the Committee and Management Personnel;
  4. The organisation providing an indemnity to Management Personnel in accordance with the club’s constitution and rules;
  5. Defence costs in relation to allegations of defamation against the club’s Management Personnel; and/or
  6. Allegations of wrongful advice to Members and/or poor decision making by the Management Personnel.

INSURANCE CONSIDERATIONS

Below are some considerations to work towards the most suitable insurance coverage for your club’s assets and activities:

Security and Fire Protection

Reviewing security for the club buildings and grounds is also a good idea, because insurers may have requirements that certain security/monitored alarms and the like are in place and current. Being prudent so as to prevent a burglary is a better scenario than going through a burglary claim process. Fire protection is something to be seriously considered too, and so smoke detectors, heat detectors, fire extinguishers, and monitored fire alarms all need to be serviced and kept up to date (both for insurance purposes and essential health and safety requirements). Also, the club’s Management Personnel need to be familiar with any insurance policy requirements regarding kitchen/catering arrangements, including deep fat fryer warranty endorsements and requirements for cleaning extractor flues.

Sum Insured review

Now could be a good time to ensure your club is adequately insured.  We suggest you do a review of your club’s contents, stock (food/beverage and merchandise), building sums, sheds, tennis courts and equipment, non-registered vehicles, plant and equipment and the shop. Theft/burglary/ram raids appear to be on the rise so being properly insured could be essential to ensure you can replace any stolen/damaged items and deal with any damage to club property. If your building valuation is older than 2 years, you should consider having an updated valuation completed.
