Club Culture at the Core: Insights from the Health Check Survey
What are clubs saying?
" The club culture session helped us bring people from across the club together. The positive energy in the sesion made it easey for people to engage and share their ideas. The structure to the day meant we brought coolective information together to create a clear plan of what we wanted to do" Tauranga Lawn Tennis Club.
"We gave a voice to our people and in doing this, we learnt so much about ourselves, areas we were doing well and those we were not doing so well. One outcome was that our volunteer engagement went through the roof" Pāpāmoa Tennis Club
Club Health Check Survey – Governance & Culture Insights
The recent Club Health Check survey has highlighted a strong emphasis among clubs on the importance of culture, both in governance and general club operations. Two key governance-related priorities emerged
1. Committee Culture
Clubs consistently ranked Committee Culture as the top governance priority. This reflects a growing recognition that the effectiveness of a club’s leadership is not solely based on structure or compliance, but on the relationships, communication, and shared values within the committee. Clubs are seeking support to foster inclusive, collaborative, and forward-thinking committee environments that can drive positive change and better engage their communities
2. General Governance Practices
General Governance Practices, such as policies, procedures, and compliance, were also ranked highly suggesting that clubs value sound governance frameworks, they are increasingly aware that these must be underpinned by a healthy internal culture to be truly effective.
Training & Resource Implications
These findings align with broader trends in club development, where culture-building is seen as foundational. Clubs are not only asking for resources to improve governance structures but are also prioritising training that strengthens interpersonal dynamics, leadership styles, and volunteer engagement.
This reinforces the need for future support programmes to integrate cultural development into both governance and general club operations—ensuring that clubs are not just well-managed, but also welcoming, resilient, and community-driven.
