Play Tennis Safely

A Letter for Clubs & Coaches in Auckland

We have heard from several clubs and coaches that some members and coaching clients are nervous about returning to play and wanted to reassure them about the work everyone is doing to keep tennis running safely under the current restrictions. Please feel free to pass on this letter from Tennis NZ CEO Julie Paterson to your members and clients, or alternatively you are welcome to copy the text below and send direct from your club or coaching business as an email or part of a newsletter.

Tennis NZ, Tennis Auckland and Tennis Northern have also been fielding lots of enquiries from clubs and players over the past 10 days or so.  The complexities of Level 3.1 are more than we’ve experienced in previous levels, so we have prepared some answers to the most common FAQ’s we are getting.  You are welcome to share these with your members and clients, add to your website, or just keep on hand if you get questions.  If there is anything that isn’t asked on the FAQ’s, please let us know and we will keep the document updated online.

Lastly, we have just launched a digital marketing campaign in Auckland promoting tennis as safe, distanced option for recreation under the current restrictions. You’ll likely see some of our ads pop up soon in your social media.  As long as restrictions don’t get tighter, we are also planning some radio ads promoting tennis in the region during November.

Kia Ora Auckland Tennis Players,

We know how tough things are right now with the current outbreak and wanted to reach out to you on behalf of the tennis community to let you know what we’re doing to ensure our game can still be played safely and within the rules for Level 3.1 in Auckland.

The chance to connect with friends and whanau from one additional household, and to enjoy recreation outdoors is so important for our mental health. Tennis is the perfect sport to enjoy in a safe, distanced outdoor environment. You’ll have fun, keep fit and enjoy the company of others.

We’ve developed a set of guidelines based on current advice from Sport New Zealand and the Government COVID-19 Response Group that make tennis safe and enjoyable under Level 3.1. These guidelines allow for play between a maximum of two households as well as individual or small group coaching sessions (less than 10 people) with a professional tennis coach. For more details on how to play safely during Level 3.1 please click here.

Your clubs, coaches, Tennis Auckland, Tennis Northern and Tennis NZ are all working hard to ensure you can still enjoy the game we love. If you don’t feel comfortable hitting the court just now, that’s completely fine, however if you have questions about play under the current restrictions, we do encourage you to reach out to your club or coach to learn what they are putting in place to keep everyone safe.

Brighter times will come soon enough for Auckland; in the meantime, we hope tennis can be a highlight for you during lockdown!

Kia Kaha Auckland – We’ll get through this together!
