Wahine Scholarship Recipients 2023

Thursday, 27 April 2023

Tennis New Zealand is committed to increasing the visibility and capability of women in tennis. To achieve this aim we are proud to offer three coaches a scholarship to attend a Junior Development Coaching course.

Maria JDC Schlorship

I'm Maria and I am doing my JDC in Wellington. I'm a born and bred Taranaki girl coaching mainly hot shots, at Rotokare Tennis Club. I have been playing tennis for as long as I can remember following my parents to the courts most weekends. In more recent years, I've completed a degree in sport management and marketing, this along with the coaching qualification will allow me to move into a more full time role, immersing myself in all areas of tennis. I hope to gain all the knowledge I can from my facilitators and I'm really appreciative of the opportunity I have because of the Wahine Scholarship.

Jackie J

I'm Jackie and I'm doing the Auckland JDC. I believe sport is the perfect vessel for creativity and fun. I belong to the Papamoa tennis community based in the Western Bay of Plenty and have assisted our head coach in introducing tennis to the local schools. The JDC programme will provide me with the motivation and skill to help facilitate further programmes, particularly to our wahine to increase their participation and accessibility to the game of tennis.

Chloe JDC Schlorship

I'm Chloe and I'm doing the Auckland JDC. I grew up in Helensville, West Auckland and have been a member of our local Helensville Tennis Club for the past 4 years while playing interclub in the Tennis Northern Region. Over the years I have had the opportunity to work with some great coaches from Kiwi Tennis, Albany Tennis Park and most recently Tabi Porter, a previous recipient of the Wahine Scholarship, who has been inspirational in supporting my tennis development and desire to work with children as a tennis coach.

I still consider myself to be a Tennis ‘newbie’ hence I’m looking forward to participating in this years JDC course as I look to further develop my coaching skills and tennis fundamentals. I’m very keen to learn more about some of the other topics covered by the course including Cardio and Xpress Tennis which I believe are a great way to engage new and existing members. While completing the JDC I will continue to coach at Helensville and Albany Tennis Park, so please feel free to pop in and say hello if you see me out on the court
